Reason for no Resident Evil Revelations 2 on 3DS is 'partly technical'
Capcom has explained why episodic sequel Resident Evil Revelations 2 won't see a release on Nintendo 3DS.
Though the original game debuted on the handheld before coming to consoles, it was the latter systems that were the "starting point" for a sequel, according to producer Michiteru Okabe.
"The original game was released on home consoles a little while after the 3DS. It was called the 'Unveiled Edition' in Japan but just Resident Evil Revelations for consoles in the West," he told Digital Spy.
"That's where our starting point for the sequel is in a sense, the versions that were already on home platforms.
"It's partly a technical reason," he continued. "We have our own custom engine called the MT Framework, and as the mobile and home console versions are quite different technically, given that we were taking the home console versions as a starting point, it just led somewhat naturally.
"We tried to release it on as many platforms as we could, and that later became a selection of current and next-gen Xbox and PlayStation platforms as well as PC, so that's how we ended up with that."
Okabe added that there are "no plans" for a Wii U version, and couldn't comment on the recently-announced Vita edition since it's being handled by Sony.
Resident Evil Revelations 2 will debut on February 24 on PS3 and PS4 in North America, with a European launch one day later on the 25th. The Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC release will also be on February 25.
Each individual episode will be available for £4.99 ($5.99), or as part of a £19.99 ($24.99) season pass with additional game content. A retail edition is also planned.
Digital Spy recently went hands-on with Barry and his new companion Natalia Korda in the game, as well as the new Raid mode. Watch below:
