It's Official: Silent Hills Is Canceled
Sorry, folks—the recently-announced (and much-anticipated) horror game Silent Hills is not happening.
The new Silent Hill game, announced last year through a playable teaser called P.T. (which actually stands for “playable teaser”), was set to be a collaboration between film director Guillermo del Toro and Metal Gear Solid designer Hideo Kojima. It would star the actor Norman Reedus and a whole lot of horror fans were pretty damn excited about it.
Over the past month, as word began to escape the Konami factory that things are not well between the Japanese publisher and Kojima, speculation began that Silent Hills might be no more. Things heated up over the weekend as del Toro publicly stated that the game wasn’t happening, and sure enough, now it’s official.
Says Konami in a statement to Kotaku:
Konami is committed to new Silent Hill titles, however the embryonic ‘Silent Hills’ project developed with Guillermo del Toro and featuring the likeness of Norman Reedus will not be continued.
In terms of Kojima and Del Toro being involved, discussions on future Silent Hill projects are currently underway, and please stay tuned for further announcements.
Guillermo del Toro sure has a tragic history with video games, huh? This is his second big gaming project to fall under the axe, following the terribly-named Insane, which was cancelled in 2012 as THQ fell apart.
P.T. will be pulled from the PlayStation Network this week, so go download it now if you want to see what might have been.
